If you've ever experienced a summer in Texas, you know staying cool is essential. Whether you're floating down the Guadalupe, hanging out by the pool or running along your favorite trails, there is nothing like having an ice cold drink to make you feel refreshed.
Last summer I started experimenting with different ingredients, trying to create a fruit smoothie that I could enjoy without the guilt of knowing it was packed with artificial ingredients and sugars. Not only did I want it to quench my thirst, but I wanted it to be something I could drink pre or post workout---the result is something I call, "Sadie's Sunrise."
This smoothie is filled with a mixture of fruits, proteins and glutamine, and it has a great summertime vibe without tasting too sweet. If you aren't familiar with glutamine, it's an amino acid that aids in the synthesis of protein. It minimizes the breakdown of muscles and helps your body recover. After an intense workout your glutamine levels drastically decrease and it can take several days for them to refuel, which decreases your stamina.
My three dogs are my world so I've created a smoothie in honor of each of them. Sadie is sweet, sassy and cool---a perfect description of this smoothie. Check back for Auto and Chico's smoothie recipes coming this summer.
