Got (Chocolate) Milk?

When it comes to replenishing your body after a long run or cycle session, you don’t always need fancy (and expensive) protein shakes. In fact, one of the most effective recovery drinks might already be in your fridge—and you probably bought it for your kids.

Chocolate milk is all grown up and making a name for itself in the world of endurance athletes. Why? According to an article on, research shows that “chocolate milk contains an ideal carbohydrate-to-protein ratio that is essential for refueling tired or damaged muscles and assists with the workout recovery process.” Plus it is low in calories, cholesterol, and saturated fat, and full of calcium and essential vitamins and minerals. Need another reason? It tastes darn good!

If you (like Wes) are lactose intolerant—no worries. There are plenty of alternatives on the market.. One of my personal favorites is H-E-B’s 2% Reduced Fat Chocolate Mootopia. (Yes, I work at H-E-B—but no, that’s not why!) This lactose free blend tastes so insanely rich and decadent, it satisfies my chocolate cravings, while packing 50% more protein than regular milk. I also appreciate the fact that it has 50% less sugar and 40% less fat than regular milk so I get the benefits without the guilt. I also like Carnation Instant Breakfast powder for it’s portability. Just add a packet to 8oz of milk, stir and enjoy.
