Over the years we’ve logged hundreds of miles in dozens of running shoes, sometimes choosing a brand based on nothing more than color and style. Through trial and error, we’ve learned that some didn’t offer enough support, others got tight in the toes, and then there were those that felt like lead on our feet. That’s why we were so excited to be among the first to check out the new FIT ID machine at Fleet Feet Sports. This high tech device takes a 3D scan of your feet, giving you the most accurate measurements of everything from length, to width, to instep so you can find the fit that’s right for you.
After standing on the machine for just 3 seconds, Wes and I learned that we both have low insteps, and that our right feet are larger than our left. I also learned that I have a medium arch and that my feet turn in slightly, which could require additional support in my shoes.
Although the machine doesn’t recommend a specific shoe or brand, the information it provides allows the Fleet Feet staff to offer the customer the best options based on his or her needs from the wide selection of inventory. It also allows them to send the information to vendors so that they can create better fitting shoes in the long run (pun intended).
“We aren’t changing the way we fit shoes,” explains Garrett Sage, owner of Fleet Feet at the Quarry. “We are just helping people understand it better.”
