Growing up I started every morning by downing a big glass of milk...and a few cookies. But when I turned 30 that had to stop because I became lactose and gluten intolerant---I was mortified! To me there was nothing more refreshing than a glass of milk but the consequences soon outweighed the pleasure.
For the past few years I’ve enjoyed coconut milk as my substitute, I’ve also tried almond milk but the oils seem to upset my stomach. My favorite coconut milk flavor and brand is “Organic Unsweetened Vanilla” by So Delicious, you can find it at most HEB’s.
Recently while I was visiting Kevin at Central Market I came across something different, “Planet Oat’s Dark Chocolate Oatmilk”. I probably know what you’re thinking, it didn’t sound very appetizing to me either. I immediately thought of oatmeal and pondered how in the world could this be good? However what piqued my interest was that it came in a dark chocolate flavor, not just regular chocolate---DARK. I had been craving chocolate milk for a while so I figured why not give it a try, afterall there aren’t many chocolate milk choices when you’re lactose intolerant.
I got home, poured myself a cup and to my surprise I found it delicious! It’s thinner than coconut and regular milk but it made my taste buds dance---the use of dark chocolate could definitely be tasted. One glass will only set you back 140 calories and it offers 3 grams of protein. What’s even better is that the product is lactose, gluten, soy, nut, artificial flavor & color free! You can even print out a $1 off coupon from their website.
If you are a chocolate lover and want to indulge without the repercussions of drinking regular milk then you need to give this a shot. Plant Oats has a Vanilla flavor that I’ve witnessed at several HEB UP stores like Alon but I’ve only seen the Dark Chocolate flavor at Central Market---another reason why I love this store! Try it out and let me know what you think!
